Praja Rajyam moves High Court for common symbol

Allu Aravind, general secretary of the Praja Rajyam Party filed a petition in the A P High Court seeking a direction to the Election Commission of India to allot Rail Engine as the party’s common symbol for contesting the forthcoming general elections in the state.

In the petition, PRP cited the example of Telangana Rashtra Samithi which was given a common symbol by the election commission in 2004 and sought a similar treatment for PRP also.

The petition further stated that since the majority of the voters in the country are either illiterate or semi-literate; the common symbol is essential and indispensable to all the candidates of a political party irrespective of whether the party is recognised or registered.
