Here is a brief history of the Olympic Games:
The first Olympic Games were held in 776 BCE according to available written records. However, the games are believed to be much older.
At this Olympic Games, a runner Coroebus won the only event, called the stade, a run of approximately 192 meters (210 yards), making him the very first Olympic champion in history.
The ancient Olympic Games continued to be played every four years for nearly 1200 years. In 393 CE, the Roman emperor Theodosius I, a Christian, abolished the Games because of their pagan influences.
The modern Olympics had been revived again with the constitution of the International Olympic Committee(IOC) in 1894, at the initiative of a French nobleman, Pierre Baron de Coubertin. Later on, the IOC started Winter Olympics also.
The first Olympic Games under IOC were the 1896 Summer Olympics, held in Athens, Greece. The last Summer Olympics were the 2004 Games in Athens and the Winter Olympics were the 2006 Games in Turin.
