AP still in political turmoil: Lagadapati arrested
The state of Andhra Pradesh is still continuing to be in political turmoil with agitation for United AP in the Andhra and Rayalaseema regions going on unabated. The two regions observed three-day bandh paralyzing normal life.
Vijayawada Congress MP Lagadapati Rajagopal, who was the first congressman to resign protesting against the Union Government’s decision to carve out a separate Telangana state, is likely to go on a fast-unto-death from Today. As soon as he landed in Hyderabad Today morning, he was arrested by the police at the RGI Airport at Shamshabad. His Lanco Group of companies has huge business interests in Hyderabad.
Interestingly, the Center conceded separate Telangana while TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao undertook indefinite fast. In Andhra and Rayalaseema regions, the Congress, Telugu Desam and Praja Rajyam Party politicians have joined hands, with TDP and PRP MLAs undertaking relay fasts. The TRS decided to be silent and to watch the unfolding events.
To initiate the process for a separate Telangana, a resolution to that effect has to be passed in the state Legislative Assembly. With 131 MLAs from Congress, TDP and PRP submitting their resignations to the Speaker, the situation is volatile and uncertain.
The Union Government is said to be weighing various options to bring the political peace in the state.
