LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran has been killed by the Sri Lankan army troops while he was fleeing along with his top aides. Sri Lanka’s army chief, Lt. Gen. Sareth Fonseka said the last pockets of rebel resistance have been cleared from the north.
Prabhakaran’s death would spell the end of a more than three-decade armed struggle by him and his outfit for a separate state for minority Tamils across northern and eastern Sri Lanka.
Rupavahini television, the state broadcaster, announced that all the top commanders of LTTE including Anthony, son of Prabhakaran, Soosai and Pottu Amman have been killed in action.
The bodies of Prabhakaran and other LTTE commanders have been identified.
