Dazzling opening to Commonwealth Games
A festive crowd of almost 60,000 packed the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium in Delhi on Sunday night for a dazzling opening of the games.
The ‘Rhythms of India,’ a vibrating five-minute show comprising 800 drummers set the tempo. Thereafter, 1,050 school children from the capital performed choreography of Namaste, an acknowledged sign of welcome and respect to the guests.
Prince Charles read out a message from the Queen of England and President Pratibha Patil declared the Games open, with the words, “Let the Games begin.”
