1st Woman LS Speaker Meira Kumar elected unanimously
When the 15th Lok Sabha convened Today, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi proposed the name of Meira Kumar as the Speaker of the new House along with the Leader of Opposition L K Advani and leaders of other political parties. She was elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha unanimously.
Sonia’s proposal was seconded by Pranab Mukherjee and that of Advani was done by Sushma Swaraj.
Then, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and LK Advani accompanied her to the Speaker’s podium and witnessed her new occupation.
Karia Munda, a nominee of the BJP was also elected unanimously for the post of Deputy Speaker.
Meira Kumar, belonging to the Indian Foreign Service, who resigned in 1985 to enter politics, is the daughter of former Deputy Prime Minister Jagjeevan Ram. She created history by becoming the first ever Lady Speaker of the Indian Parliament, the largest democracy in the world.
