Stringent norms for entry into IIT-JEE

Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said that securing of 60% marks in class XII will not be sufficient for entry into IITs from 2011 as the criteria is being revised wherein higher percentage would be required. The minimum marks required for IIT-JEE could be raised up to 80 to 85%.
The IIT-JEE system was revised three years ago when the eligibility criteria was raised to 60% at class XII level for appearing in the entrance.
The central government on Monday appointed a committee of IIT directors to suggest the revised entrance system under which marks obtained in class XII or Intermediate will be given importance along with the Joint Entrance Test marks.
The move is aimed at ensuring that students take their class XII seriously and at the same time to check the mushroom growth of coaching centers.
