Virodhi tries to bring out how socialist philosophies are diluted by self-styled revolutionaries who bring more destruction to the society and cause disruption of life. The film also brings forth how energetic youth are misguided by selfish leaders in the name of change in the society.
Jaidev (Srikanth) is a socially conscious journalist who is known to call a spade a spade irrespective of the risks involved. Naturally, he is disliked by the politicians. While he was interviewing a minister (Ahuthi Prasad), the latter was killed by an extremist dalam led by Gogi(Ajay). The attackers kidnap Jaidev as a shield for their escape into the forest. Police commando units under the command of Police Commissioner (Nagineedu) try to rescue Jaidev.
While going along with the dalam members, Jaidev starts conversing with the other dalam members
Hari (Kamal Kamaraju), Ramakrishna (Ravi Varma), Mallaiah (Sivaji Raja) and others (rupali, sri ramya, kiran Varanasi). He asks some basic questions for which the dalam members do not have proper answers. The talks with Jaidev bring some introspection in the minds of the dalam members. They try to know what they are doing is right. Meanwhile, Gogi plans to execute Jaidev. Will Jaidev be able to escape from the captivity of the Gogi’s dalam? What is the effect of Jaidev on the minds of the dalam members? Will the police be able to nab the dalam members? The answers to these questions form the rest of the story.
Srikanth is subdues and gives a confident performance as an upright journalist. Ajay and
Kamal Kamaraju give an impressive performance. Kamalini Mukherjee is just part of the props. Nagineedu and Ahuthi Prasad are good in their roles. Sri Ramya, Kiran Varanasi, Ravi Varma and Rupali Fulsunge fit their roles. All others are OK.
Director Neelakanta weaves the story to bring out the inherent contradictions of revolutionary extremists and the story does not follow the mainstream cinema format. The dialogues are meaningful. The screenplay is good though it drags the narration here and there. Misic has only a supporting role. Cinematography by Ramachandra is vibrant.
Virodhi is a serious cinema and will appeal to the thinking students of films and critical cine buffs. Since the film is not in the commercial formula, it may not appeal to the regular audience of single screens. Even films with a message should have a mass appeal to spread the message.
