Vaada Raha…I Promise is based on the theme of hope but dealt with hopelessly particularly in either delineating the characters or in convincingly constructing the events or in unfolding them in a credible manner.
Duke Chawla (Bobby Deol) is a doctor with professional reputation and an affectionate gentleman with a pet dog and a loving girl friend Nalini (Kangana Ranaut).
The beautiful life of Duke comes to an abrupt end when he suffers an attack of paralysis from the neck to his feet following an accident. He is bed ridden. Nalini promptly deserts him and Duke suffers from bitterness and angry with his own pitiful condition.
Then enters Roshan (Dwij Yadav) a boy, a patient himself, but he befriends a reticent Duke and slowly motivates him into a positive state of mind and helps him to revive his will power to heal himself.
A limping Duke on crutches leaves the hospital and is not ready for the
surprises that await him. What will Duke do to regain his past glory leads to the climax.
Bobby Deol’s portrayal of the perfect doctor and the bed-ridden patient is very convincing and the only saving grace of the film. It can be rated as one of Bobby’s best performances. Kangana Ranaut has nothing much to do. Dwij Yadav excels as a child counselor. Prateeksha Lonkar is very convincing. Mohnish Bahl, Sharat Saxena and Vivek Shauq just go through their motions.
Director Samir Karnik completes his trilogy with Vaada Raha…I Promise
while Nanhe Jaisalmer was about dreams and Heroes was about pride. The common cast of the Trilogy was that of Bobby and Dwij and the common platform is the portrayal of emotions. While dreams and pride can be translated on screen, hope has to come out on screen through a complex maze of emotions, subtle expressions, meaningful events and credible dialogues that show the evolving pattern of hope or its revival.
To that extent, Samir Karnik disappoints in Vaada Raha…I Promise. He has concentrated only on the characters of Bobby and Dwij. All other characters, particularly that of Kangana could have really added the essence of the emotion of hope.
When the characters are not delineated properly, the events get monotonous and the narration becomes unbearable.
The technical aspects of the film are quite good but fail to elevate a structurally defective script. Average music adds to the woes.
The reviewer of Vaada Raha…I Promise cannot promise that you will enjoy the average cinematic fare unless you are a die-hard fan of Bobby Deol or Samir Karnik.
