Toh Baat Pakki is a family oriented light hearted comedy that exposes certain family values that are basically not in sync with the value system of the present day generation.
The story is rooted in the Saxena community. Rajeshwari (Tabu) and Vinay (Ayub Khan) are an amiable couple. Her only aim is get the best match for her sister Nisha (Yuvika Choudhary). The only constrant is the prospective bridegroom must be from the Saxena community but without any dowry. She spots Rahul (Sharman Joshi), an engineering student, and invites him to be a paying guest in her house. She contrives to bring Rahul and Nisha together and they promptly fall in love. The marriage ‘baath’ is ‘pakki’. The twist in the tale is the arrival of Yuvraj (Vatsal Sheth) who also belongs to the Saxena community, hates the dowry system and has a top job that pays him a generous salary. Now, Rajeswari wants to turn the tables on Rahul and desperately wants her sister Nisha to marry Yuvraj. With whom will Nisha end up in wedlock, Rahul or Yuvraj ?
Tabu is in her elements and gives forth a convincing performance. Sharman Joshi essays her role well. Vatsal Sheth is passable. Yuvika Choudhary has nothing much to do. Himani Shivpuri and Suhasini Mulay are their usual selves. The rest are OK.
The story is based on an interesting and promising premise, but the screenplay is too week to make the narration watchable with attention throughout the duration. Some incidents and episodes are too contrived to be credible. Vibha Singh could have written a better screenplay. Even his dialogues miss the comic punch. Director Kedar Shinde tried to imitate the films of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee, but without that essential element of engrossing the viewer from Opening Titles to The End. Music by Pritam is passable. The cinematography is good.
It is difficult to say a ‘pakka baat’ about Toh Baat Pakki. It has its faults and flaws and at best a time pass film.
