SS Rajamouli’s Eega: India’s First Creature Movie

SS Rajamouli is creating history by making the first creature movie in Telugu. It is also the first time for the vast Indian cinema industry to have a film with a creature, in this case a housefly, as the protagonist. It is also the first time in Tollywood that Rs 34 crores budget was spent on a film without any top hero or heroine.

Tollywood has had films with animals — horses, bulls, cows, dogs, — and birds — parrots, peacocks, roosters, swans. There were horror films and Nagini-type films with snakes. But never a creature film.

This creature genre is quite popular in Hollywood with films like Predator, Aliens, Tremors, Jeepers Creepers, Slither, The Fly, The Descent, Feast, The Mist, Jaws, Spiderman and so on.

But Eega is made in the Indian mainstream cinema genre where the housefly sings, dances and fights showing remarkable intelligence. It is also the hero of the film, unlike Hollywood creature movies where creatures are shown as enemies of mankind trying to destroy the human beings.

According to sources, almost all the shows of Eega from July 6 to 8 have been booked in advance all over Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Kerala and the metros in India and also in USA, UK and Australia.
