Shiva Thandavam Movie Review
Shiva Thandavam is the dubbed version of Tamil film Thandavam, which is a revenge story with the usual twist of friend turning foe and of trust and betrayal.
A blind man (Vikram) works in a London church as a musician and he also kills a chosen set of people using human echolocation. He is helped in his vendetta by a mysterious character (Lakshmi Rai). Detective inspector (Nassar) investigates these apparently clueless murders. A model (Amy Jackson) develops a soft corner for the blind man. Meanwhile, a flashback reveals that the blind man has a past, a wife ( Anushka) and a colleague-cum-friend (Jagapathi Babu). What is the past of the blind man? Why is he killing certain people? Answers to these questions make way for a predictable climax.
As usual, Vikram is at his thespian best while essaying both the roles — one with sight and another without. While Anushka is as alive as a livewire, Amy looks stifled. Nassar is his normal confident self. Jagapathi Babu and Lakshmi Rai are good in their cameos. Santhanam is lacklustre. All others go through their motions.
Director AL Vijay has taken too many cinematic licences and the no-logical sequences are too illogical to induce credibility to the proceedings. The plot has no novelty except the human echolocation which wears off after the initial sheen. The screenplay has missed to create the necessary element of suspense and gives rise to predictability while many times slowing down the pace of narration. The film could have done away with songs and their placement is atrocious. Cinematography is good. Editing and sound design is ok. Production values are high.
A blind man’s vengeance always holds a promise, but without an airtight plot and gripping screenplay, the thandavam, the fiery dance of vendetta, is shorn of its vital energy. With inadequately etched characters, the movie fails to make an impact.
