Sadiyaan is a story purporting to promote Hindu-Muslim amity and deals with two time periods – the time of partition in 1947 and the contemporary era.
Friends Benazir (Hema Malini) and Amrit (Rekha) are separated at the time of partition. Benazir had left her son in India in those troubled times and leaves for Pakistan. Rajveer (Rishi Kapoor) and Amrit rescue the boy and keep him under their custody. The grown up boy Ishaan (Luv Sinha) falls in love with a Muslim girl Chandini (Ferena Wazier). Her parents object to their romance as Ishaan is a Hindu. Then Rajeev and Amrit disclose that they have adopted Ishaan but he is actually a Muslim boy born to Benazir.
The rest of the story deals with how Benazir and Amrit meet again and how the romance between Ishaan and Chandini ends.
Hema Malini and Rekha essay their roles with commendable ease. Rishi Kapoor is dignity personified. Luv Sinha, son of Shatrugan Sinha, making his debut appears comfortable. He has lot of potential. He seems to be adept at delivering emotiona drama.l Ferena Wazier is decent, but she better get
trained in any professional acting institution. Shabana Azmi is her usual confident selfAll other actors fit their roles.
Director Raj Kanwar is normally very good at weaving emotional drama and he does the same with this film. However, the multiplex audience may feel that this film is on the wrong side of melodrama. The dialogues are meaningful and Adnan Sami’s music adequately supports the narration. Cinematography captures well the
various moods of emotions and the time periods.
Sdiyaan is worth one look.
