Road To Sangam Hindi Movie Review
Road To Sangam is a simple story of complex dimensions focusing on the need for communal harmony and peace.
Tushar Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, who plays himself, wants to transport an urn containing the Mahatma’s ashes for immersion in the Sangam. The vintage Ford he wants to use needs an engine repair. Hashmat Ullah (Paresh Rawal) is given the job. He is a workaholic and has nagging wife Aara (Swati Chitnis).
There had been a bomb blast in Allahabad and some Muslim youth are
arrested. Protesting against the arrests, the local Muslim leaders Maulana Qureshi (Pawan Malhotra) and Mohammed Ali Kasuri (Om Puri) call for a bandh. Hashmat wants to open his garage and complete his work. Zulfikar (Masood Akhtar) another mechanic opposes him. Gaffar (Yusuf Hussain) masjid committee member supports him. Will the conscience of one man overcome the communal frenzy? Will Gandhi’s ashes reach the Sangam?
Paresh Rawal comes out with an award winning performance and one of his best to date. Pawan Malhotra electrifies the screen. Om Puri shines in his
limited role. Pakistani artist Javed Sheikh and Masood Akhtar do justice to their roles. All others perform with conviction.
Amit Rai has written and directed this thought provoking film with some vibrant cinematography by Dharam Gulati. The music and lyrics add to the different moods of the film. Had the narration been not on the slower side and the duration a little shorter would have made Road To Sangam a little easier to traverse. Sermonising is a little bit hard to swallow. Overall Amit Rai triumphs in focusing the essence of peace and harmony through Gandhism, secularism and Indianism.
Road To Sangam is strictly for the multiplex cine buffs and the film circuit
audience. However, this film should be watched for the brilliant performances of Paresh Rawal and Pawan Malhotra and the raw, realistic presentation.
