Racial attacks: Amitabh Bachchan rejects Australian Doctorate
The reigning Indian icon Amitabh Bachchan rejected the offer of an Australian University to confer on him an honorary doctorate in the wake of racial attacks on Indian students.
The Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia had offered Amitabh Bachchan a doctorate for his contribution to the world of entertainment and the 66 year old veteran actor had earlier accepted to receive the honorary title.
The honour was to be conferred on the Big B in July as part of celebrations to commemorate a retrospective of his films in Brisbane.
Amitabh wrote in his blog that he meant no disrespect to the Institution that wanted to honour him, but under the present circumstances, where citizens of his own country were subjected to such acts of inhuman horror, his conscience did not permit him to accept this decoration from a country that perpetrates such indignity to his fellow countrymen.
Australia has recently seen a series of attacks on Indian students, the most serious being the assault of Shravan Kumar, a 25-year-old student from Andhra Pradesh who is battling for life in a hospital after being stabbed by a screwdriver by a group of assailants.
