The Film

Aditya Chopra, wielding the megaphone after a long hiatus, appears to have lost his magic touch in narrating a cinema story. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, even with Shah Rukh Khan, fails to grip the attention of the audience.
The Synopsis

Surinder (Shah Rukh Khan) is an ordinary bespectacled middle class man sincerely working for Punjab Power and leads a routine mundane life. The inner man in him wakes up when sees Taani (Anushka Sharma) who is an extrovert living life joyously and loves dancing.

Destiny makes them man and wife. To completely win over the heart of his wife, Surinder takes a clean shaven avatar of Raj. After a twist in the tale, the story leads to a dramatic climax.

The Performances

Shah Rukh Khan gives his usual peppy performance. He appears convincing in his common man role. New find Anushka Sharma looked quite competent in her role.

All other artistes are quite adequate in their respective roles.

The Techniques

Aditya Chopra has a good beginning and an interesting ending, but the narration in between suffers from contrived situations, loosely knitted episodes and employing avoidable cinematic licenses. The crispness in the narration is conspicuous by its absence.

The very fact that Rani Mukherjee, Kajol, Preity Zinta and Priyanka Chopra have been roped in shows that even Aditya knew the hollowness of the plot

The cinematography, editing and audiography are good but get relegated in the scale of recognition because of poor narration of the story. The music is not that great to write about.

The Verdict

Aditya Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan have worked very hard to make an average film. To make the character Taani think that Surinder, her husband, and Raj, her lover, are two different personalities is something too much to swallow.

A film based on a weak premise can never make a strong impression, particularly when its duration is 2 hours 50 minutes.

The Rating

2 out of 5
