Raat Gayi Baat Gayi Movie Review
Raat Gayi Baat Gayi is an adult story dealing with a one night stand (?) between a married man and a sexy female during a no holds barred party.
After partying hard in the night, Rahul (Rajat Kapoor) wakes up the next morning with a severe hangover. He suddenly gets hazy scenes of the previous night’s party. He vaguely remembers that he had gone quite close to Sophia (Neha Dhupia). He doesn’t know what ultimately happened between him and her. Meanwhile, his wife Mitali (Irawati Harshe) deliberately ignores him making him feel guilty and he is curious to know what exactly happened the previous night.
Rahul meets his other two friends Saxena (Dalip Tahil) and Amit (Vinay Pathak) who were there in the party. But, he can’t get clarifications to his own doubts. Saxena has troubled relationship with his wife Jolly (Navneet Nishan) and Amit (Vinay Pathak) has been thrown out of his house by his wife (Anuradha Menon).
There is no other alternative for Rahul except to confront Sophia. What
happens from then on leads to a typical climax.
The best part of this film is the performances particularly by Rajat Kapoor, Vinay Pathak and Neha Dhupia. Veteran actor Dalip Tahil portrays his role with ease. Irawati Harshe and Anuradha Menon carry their roles with surprising confidence. Navneet Nishan is quite adequate. Ranvir Shorey, Makrand Deshpande and Sudhir Mishra add a little variety in their cameos.
The worst part of the film is the screenplay written by director Saurabh Shukla and the protagonist in the film Rajat Kapoor. Though the premise of the story is valid with potential surprises and twists, the narration moves at a snail’s pace. Lack of a sense of urgency smacks the screenplay with avoidable pitfalls of leisurely story-telling. The other weakness of the story is its predictability. However, the presentation is stylishly contemporary. Music by Ankut Tewari has nothing much to write about. Cinematography by Fuwad Khan is good.
Director Saurab Shukla who wrote for films like Satya, and Salaam-e-Ishq, somehow could not show the same intensity in Luck By Chance. Raat Gayi Baat Gayi is an interesting tale told tediously. However, the film might appeal to the regular multiplex movie buffs and the niche urban audience of married couples.
