No one can be more versatile than Bhanumati
Once a journalist asked Bhanumati, “Madam! People say you are proud and arrogant. What do you say?” to this, Bhanumati replied without hesitation, “Yes, I am proud. Why shouldn’t I be proud? I am multi-faceted and multi talented. And so pride is something like an ornament which is well fitted and well set for me.” And this true because she is only woman who is so multi-talented and is called ‘Bahumukha Pragnashali’ by the people. Let us have a look at her work.
As an actress she made her debut with ‘Varavikrayam’. After that she played remarkable roles in films like ‘Malleswari’, ‘Swargaseema’, ‘Laila Majnu’, ‘Prema’, ‘Chandirani’, ‘Vipranarayana’, ‘Anthasthulu’, ‘Palnati Yuddham’, ‘Bobbili Yuddham’, ‘Vivahabandham’,’Baatasari’, ‘Mangamma Gari Manavadu’, etc.
As a singer she sang great songs like Manasuna mallela malaloogene, Savirahe (Malleswari), Endukoyee thotamalee, Nagumomu (Vipranarayana), O Baatasari (Baatasari), Srikara karunalavala (Bobbili Yuddham), Sri Suryanarayana meluko (Mangamma Gari Manavadu) etc.
As a producer she produced films like Ratnamala, Laila Majnu, Vipranarayan under Bharani Pictures. As a director she directed tri-lingual film ‘Chandirani’ which was released in the year 1955. She also composed the music of the film ‘Chakrapani’. She wrote ‘Aththagai kathalu’ and Nalo Nenu and was much appreciated for her work.
Bhanumati was honored with Padma Bhusan by the government of India in 2003 and Padma Sri in 1966. Her ‘Aththagai kathalu’ won Sahitya Academy Award.
