Mahatma has a ransformational theme where a rowdy sheeter living by violent means turns into Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence or ahimsa.
Dasu (Srikanth) is a small time street rowdy collecting mamools and settling minor disputes in the slum colony where he lives. A lady politician (Jyothy) is trying to put up a Special Economic Zone and wants the slum colony vacated which is opposed by Dasu and a local leader.
Dasu meets Krishnaveni (Bhavana) who gets him bail in a case filed against him. He becomes friendly with her and circumstances lead to romantic interests between them. She is a Gandhian and has good influence on Dasu who slowly transforms into a non-violent activist.
A crooked politician (Jayaprakash Reddy) is trying to get crores of rupees from those who are planning to put up an SEZ there and promises to get the slum colony vacated.
Dasu floats a new political outfit called Mahatma Party to contest elections and rescue the slum colony dwellers from being vacated. The rest of the story deals with his success path.
Srikanth has a memorable 100th film and he has given an excellent performance. Bhavani is a misfit in her role. Jyothy essayed her role well. Jayaprakash Reddy is his usual crooked best. Uttej, Paruchuri Venkateswara Rao and Jagan are apt in their roles.
Charmee sizzles in the item song. Brahmanandam’s brief cameo is OK. All others are adequate.
Director Krishna Vamsi has come out with a good story and screenplay with dialogues having political overtones. This is not a mass entertainer but a neat take on non-violence. The cinematography is good and the music is above average. Audiography enhances the narration values.
Mahatma has to be seen for the nuances of Krishna Vamsi’s direction and Srikanth’s terrific performance, probably his best in his career.
