Kurbaan, the maiden directorial venture of Rensil DeSilva, is a story of intrigue, a saga of anguish and a summation of human madness that is told in a gripping narration with a thought provoking theme of terrorism and its aftermath.
Avantika (Kareena Kapoor) teaches at a university in New York and comes to India to look after her father (Aakash Khurana) who has suffered a cardiac ailment. She takes up a job of teaching in Delhi too when she meets another teaching professional Ehsaan Khan (Saif Ali Khan). They fall in love and get married.
Avantika gets a call from her university in New York and she along with Ehsaan leave for NY and settle in a suburb which has a major chunk of Indians as habitants.
Salma (Nauheed Cyrusi) a neighbor comes to Avantika seeking her help as she was in great danger. Before Avantika knows what is happening, she is sucked into a whirlpool of vengeance, treachery, intrigue and distrust. She is at a loss to understand whom to believe.
Then a series of incidents occur uncapping a sordid terror plot and lead to an unexpected yet brilliant climax.
Saif Ali Khan gives a superlative performance and you see more of his character than his personality.This is one act which will be remembered for a long time. Kareena Kapoor excels in emoting precisely and she carries her role with aplomb. She is sure to get awards for her role in this film. Vivek Oberoi is fabulous.
Om Puri and Kirron Kher essay their roles with ease and conviction. Dia Mirza, Nauheed Cyrusi , Aakash Khurana and Kulbhushan Kharbanda carry their roles with effortless efficacy. All others are more than adequate.
At last, Bollywood has come out with a powerful film that makes you think. The story written by Karan Johar and the screenplay and direction by Rensil D’Silva are so gripping with the edge of the seat suspense that you forget that this is a 2 hr 40 mts duration film.
Two stories, a terror plot and the love story of Saif and Kareena are skillfully woven into a crafty plait of sensible narration that is carried with extreme sensitivity.
Dialogues by Anurag Kashyap and Niranjan Iyengar are apt, m,eaningful and
thought provoking. Music by Salim-Sulaiman raise the pitch of narration of the film. Background music and sound design are superb. Cinematography by Hemant Chaturvedi is of international standard. Editing is crisp and enhances the narration velocity. Production values are high and the entire film has an international flavor.
Karan Johar and Rensil D’Silva have come out with one of the best films ever produced in Bollywood. It has a gripping screenplay, chilling thrills, melodious music, and sensitive romance coupled with superlative performances. Kurbaan raises questions that need to be answered.
Please rush to your nearest theatre and watch Kurbaan. It is an experience that you cannot afford to miss.
