Kaminey is a slick and smart thriller boldly unfolding the dark tale of twin brothers in a stark world of criminals and their nefarious network of greed and gruesome violence.
Charlie and Guddu (Shahid Kapoor) are twin brothers with speech defects. One has a lingering lisp and the other has a simmering stammer. These two have different attitudes and goals. Charlie looks for short-cut to get rich by any means while Guddu is the quintessential good man. These two do not see eye to eye and hate each other.
Guddu is in love with Sweety (Priyanka Chopra) the sister of a malevolent politician (Amole Gupte) and would like to marry her at any cost against the wishes of her brother.
Then all of a sudden things turn topsy-turvy. Charlie steals cocaine from
corrupt policemen and seeks a buyer with the help of gangster Mikhail (Chandan Roy Sanyal) and Tashi (Tenzing Nima) a drug-mug is after them.
Then all of a sudden things turn topsy-turvy. Both the brothers are drawn into the murky world of drug smugglers, gangsters, tainted cops, corrupt politicians and blood-spillers.
The only way for the brothers to survive is to be together in spite of their hatred to each other. With speedy unraveling of incidents, the rest of the thriller leads to an unpredictable climax.
Shahid Kapur is simply brilliant as he methodically essays two different characters. He does both roles with great conviction and is very impressive
with his thespian talents. Priyanka Chopra is impish and garrulous as her character demands and delivers a stunning performance.
New comer Chandan Roy Sanyal gives a creditable performance as a nervous gangster. Amole Gupte is marvelous as the crooked and corrupt politician. Tenzing Nima portrays his role with aplomb. Shiv Subrahmanyam and Hrishikesh Joshi are very convincing in their roles.
The story, script, screenplay, dialogues, music and direction by Vishal Bhardwaj are simply astounding. Kaminey is a smart and intelligent film and told in such a sustained haste that the thriller holds you back in your seat and makes you breathless.
Cinematography by Tassaduq Hussain is top notch and greatly enhances the narration structure and style. The background music heightens the thrill and chill. The song track “Dhan Te Nan” is so good that it will remain as a cult song in the coming times. The energy of the song and its vibrant picturisation is memorable.
Bollywood has so far not produced a smart and slick film like Kaminey. With this intelligent thriller Vishal Bhardwaj makes Indian cinema proud.
Kaminey is eminently watchable for four reasons : Vishal Bhardwaj’s crisp story telling, Shahid Kapur’s brilliance, Priyanka Chopra’s exuberance and the music particularly the track “Dhan Te Nan”.
Do not miss to see Kaminey.
