Harry Potter triggers illegal trade in owls

The Hedwig owl which became popular in the famous Harry Potter books and films has triggered illegal trade in owls in India as urban middle class parents are gifting their kids with the real bird as pets.

Recently, Traffic, an NGO, published a report on the illegal trade of the endangered species stating that to be the main reasons for the owls dwindling population.

Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh has said that stricter measures will be taken to to halt illegal trade in owls as well as all endangered species.
