Gurinder Chadha’s “It’s A Wonderful Afterlife”

The theme of marriage in most of Gurinder Chadha’s films is something that most Indians and the entire Indian Diaspora would relate to and ““It’s A Wonderful Afterlife” is no different.

But though Gurinder’s films revolve around marriage they also address several different issues. So, while in “Bend It Like Beckham”, the family found themselves in conflict over football, in “It’s A Wonderful Afterlife” that is releasing on May 7 in Hindi titled as “Hai Marjawaan” where the mother’s only goal in life seems to be making sure that her fat daughter be married off. And that’s not all.

The mother played by Shabana Azmi is ready to go to any length to ensure that her daughter gets the perfect groom. And to add a dash of realism, Gurinder even got her actresses Shabana and Goldie Notay to put on 25 pounds each to look the part. This sparked several rumours and the constant joke on the sets of the film was that the film is inspired by Gurinder’s own life, considering that she’s on the fatter side herself and has found love in real life.
