Ghatikudu is a slick and stylish film with Jackie Chan type action sequences and suspenseful family drama liberally sprinkled with humour.
Ashok (Suriya) is a killer for hire and a protégé of a fisherman gangster (Shayaji Shinde) who lives in a boat on Hugly river in Kolkata. They accept contract hits and execute them by collecting lakhs of rupees as fee.
Dr Abdul Kulkarni (Rahul Dev) is a rouge medical practitioner whose gang indulges in kidnapping of children, killing them and selling their body parts. After discovering mass graves of kidnapped children, a Judge (Murali) has been appointed by the government as an enquiry commission who has to submit his report in ten days.
Dr Abdul contacts Ashok and offers him four crore to assassinate the judge so that no report against his activities can be made. As soon as the Judge arrives, Ashok tries to shoot him with a telescope aided rifle but misses the target. He assures the doctor that he would complete the assignment before the judge completes his report and submits it to the government.
The Judge comes with a large entourage of his family members and their children and they stay at the government guest house which is heavily guarded by National Security Guards.
Ashok kidnaps the personal cook (Vadivelu) of the Judge and his family, threatens him and enters the guest house along with him as his brother-in-law. Govinda He makes two attempts at killing the judge but fails because of interruptions. When the bomb he kept in the car blows up, the Judge’s niece Tara (Nayanatara) suspects Govinda and wants to complain to the police.
Will Ashok masquerading as Govinda succeed in killing the Judge? Will Tara spoil the assassination attempts? Why did Ashok become a killer for hire?
The answers to these questions form the rest of the story which takes some very interesting twists and turns to end up in a thrilling climax.
Suriya is truly brilliant in his performance. He has shown many shades of his acting talent in this film. His action sequences, yogasanas, dances and comedy scenes are really enthralling. Nayanatara is glamour personified. National Award winning Murali lives his role as Judge and head of the family. B Saroja Devi as grand mother is fascinating. All others are more than adequate in their roles and cameos.
Ramesh Kanna has scripted a very good story and the screenplay, direction and presentation by KS Ravikumar is in a different class. The element of suspense has been maintained well until the truth is revealed. Music by Harris-Jayaraj is foot-tapping and a couple of numbers are melodious. Cinematography and sound design are very good. The production values are high.
Ghatikudu is a well-made action thriller with plenty of family drama and rib-tickling comedy. Though this is the dubbed version of Tamil film “Aadhavan” you will enjoy the film thoroughly. Go and watch it
