Friends Book has the backdrop of the social networking site Facebook and evolves into a murder mystery while underlining the misuse or abuse of online networking. The film was originally titled Facebook and changed to Friends Book after the title fiasco of Mr Nokia.
A bunch of six childhood friends ( Nischal, Uday, Surya, Suresh, Archana Sharma and Nisha Shetty) employed in various professions come together to develop a software to identify and delete fake accounts from social networking site Facebook with investment from Raja (Suresh). Nischal (Nischal) had an experience of getting friendly with a girl on Facebook but discovers the friend to be ‘he’ and not ’she’.
They succeed in developing the desired software and the Facebook authorities too are interested in it. As the group of friends are about to make a business deal with Facebook officials, Surya (Surya) who has the password for their software dies in an accident. The rest of the group discovers that Jessica (Preeti) is responsible for Surya’s death. When they go to Jessica’s apartment she is found murdered. Who is Jessica? Why is Surya killed? Who murdered Jessica? What happens to search-delete-fake-accounts software? Answers to these questions leads to unraveling the mystery.
Newcomers Nischal, Uday, Surya, Suresh, Archana Sharma, Nisha Shetty and Preeti make a convincing debut. Rao Ramesh is impressive. All others are ok with their roles.
The story starts on an interesting premise but the mystery part misses the thrill element as the content has no configuration of an exciting conflict. The screenplay has its pitfalls that has an effect on the narrative flow. Dialogues are normal. Music is passable. Cinematography and editing leaves much to be desired.
Nupur Asthana’s Hindi film Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge and Jaya B’s Telugu film Lovely have Facebook as intrinsic to the plot of their respective stories. RP Patnaik attempted a thriller with Facebook as the focal point but too many characters, unnecessary diversions and lack of proper conflict-denouement makes Friends Book taste like biryani without spices.
