The title suggests a rib-tickling comedy, but the film Fitting Master is semi-serious attempt to convey a message through a meaningless formula format of revenge killings.
Sampath (Naresh) works as a caretaker of gym and his behavior and utterances give a feeling that he might be either a misanthropist or a misogynist. He appears to be totally against the youthful love affairs. At the slightest provocation, he goes on lecturing on all sorts of issues and events. He is noticed by Meghna (Madalasa), a rich, arrogant and self-centered girl, who vows to transform him. In the process, she falls in love with him but rejected by him. She sends her brother to mediate and Sampath kills him.
Why did Sampath kill Meghna’s brother? Will Sampath and Meghna meet again? The rest of the story deals with the answers to these questions.
Naresh so far has performed well in comedy roles in his films. Fitting Master gives him a role, where he and
his family has been wronged, and he is on a self-proclaimed mission of vengeance and liquidation of the offenders. Naresh clearly failed to live upto the challenges of the role.
Madalasa fits into the glamour role, but has not much of an opportunity to showcase her acting abilities. The comedy characters do not properly fit into the general narration of the story and so fail to deliver any humour. All other characters are just adequate.
The biggest drawback is the lack of sync between the title and the story. The title is as important as the story and screenplay. The premise of the story is certainly based on a stray incident, though contrived, and the narration of the story from the point of the protagonist somehow does not attract the attention of the viewers. In that context, the story and screenplay must be said to have failed to deliver. The dialogues are insipid and stale. Though music is good, what is the purpose of songs in a revenge drama? The technical values are up to the mark, but pale into insignificance, because of lack of novelty either in the story or in its narration.
Fitting Master is a lackluster film from an experienced director. EVV is known for his comedies. Perhaps, he should stick to that genre. His Aame could have been just a stray hit. This revenge drama shows him out of his depths.
Fitting master is the colloquial sobriquet given to a person who puts other people into inconvenient and even embarrassing situations. With this film, the director himself appears to be the fitting master for the audience, by drawing them to the theatres with a mismatch of a title.
