Dammu has the usual backdrop of the feud between two powerful rural families and how the hero, by force of circumstances, gets sucked into the vortex of violence to bring peace and order.
An orphan Rama Raju (NTR Jr) lives a decent life in the city trying to earn his living through good deeds. He falls in love with a girl (Trisha) who is the daughter of a multimillionaire. As fates would have it, he is adopted by Rudra Bhupathi (Kota Srinivasa Rao) of the Vasireddy dynasty. He is now rechristened as Raja Vasireddy. However, when he goes to Veeradurgam, he finds that that the Vasireddy family has a cruel rival (Nazar) who does not want any male heir of Vasireddy family to be alive. How Raja deals with the situations arising out of the antagonists forms the rest of the story.
NTR Jr is energetic and ebullient as the script has been written only for him. Trisha and Karthika are mere glam dolls. Kota, Suman, Bhanupriya and Nazar are convincing. Ali and Brahmanandam are as usual. All others go through their motions.
The drawback of the story is that it has a period theme ( samsthanam or zamindari) while the presentation is in the modern times. The romantic track is lackluster. The emotional scenes after the hero’s adoption are too melodramatic for the audience to empathise. The dialogues are written to boost the star image of NTR Jr. Music has nothing to rave about. Cinematography is good. Background score syncs with the scenes. Production values are high.
Dammu appears to be conceived and made keeping the star’s fans in view and to that extent it succeeds. For the regular cine-buff, it is the same old story with a new label (title). The film’s narration suffers from extreme predictability. There is nothing new or any novelty in the film to wow the non-fan audience.
