The Cinematograph Act is being amended to expand censor classification to warn of sleaze and violence in films.
While U (Universal), A (Adults) and U/A (Universal and Adult) will continue to exist, A+ (indicating excessive gore, violence or sleaze) and 12+ and 15+ (covering movies in which abuses are used freely) would be introduced.
The changes were proposed by former Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairperson Sharmila Tagore. CBFC officials said the need for devising new categories was felt as the film industry pressed for classification along international lines.
Since a few years, the number of adult films in the country has gone up. Of the 1,026 films released in 2011, 200 were accorded ‘A’ certificates.
