Bollywood has churned out more Adults only films compared to other regional language films in the year 2008. Out of the 248 Hindi film releases 63 were A-rated, 92 were UA-rated and 93 were U-rated movies. The Telugu film industry followed, with 62 movies that could be viewed only by adults.
The adult films in Tamil were 37, Kannada 21 and Malayalam 13. But, 152 of the 217 foreign feature films released last year were given adult ratings.
In a strange anomaly, the English version of “Slumdog Millionnaire” this year was A-rated while the Hindi version got a U certificate.
A-rated movies are those cleared by the Censor Board of Film Certification for viewing by people of age 18 and above. They are marked A because of sexual and violent content and explicit language. U-rated movies, on the other hand, are those that can be viewed by the entire family, including kids. UA-rated movies can be seen under parental guidance.
