Bollywood’s crisis with telecast of ‘A’ certified films

There is a growing concern in the film industry over losing satellite prices after the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry (I&B ) decided to push to 11 pm the telecast of Vidya Balan starrer The Dirty Picture due its adult content.

amitabh bachchan tweeted, “A spokesperson for the I&B ministry indicates that perhaps, all films given ‘A’ certificate from Censors, shall not be on Tele. So if ‘A’ certificate films banned on TV, Satellite Rights shall go for a toss .. no TV , no sale.”

Interestingly, the number of ‘A’ certificate films has been on the rise in the last three years. As per the data from the censor board, in 2008 the number of films that were given ‘A’ certificate were 403 which jumped to 452 in 2010 and the numbers further went up in 2011.

According to Bollywood sources, producers whose movies have an ‘A’ certificate may not get the market price. Advertising will suffer and also TRPs for the film may not be very encouraging for a broadcaster to invest money in a ‘A’ certified film.
