Bhojpuri cinema is one of the fastest growing regional film industries in India. Actors Ravi Kissen and Sudip Pandey are the top stars in Bhojpuri films. Ravi Kissen’s Bhojpuri film Kab Hoi Gawna Hamar has won the National Film Award.
Sudip Pandey is an action hero and his films include Bhojpuriya Daroga, Masiha, Bagawat, Anna Ke Aandhi among others. Like Kamal Hasan in Dasavatharam, he played 10 roles in the Bhojpuri film Kasam Tiranga Ke. He is presently in Malaysia shooting for the film Paro Patnawali produced by Ranju Sinha and directed by Raj Verma.
The growing market for Bhojpuri films include the areas of western Bihar, the northwestern part of Jharkhand and the Purvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh. The international market is spread in Terai and Birgunj in Nepal, Singapore, Malaysia, Brazil, Fiji, Guyana, Mauritius,South Africa, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Saint Vincent, Grenadines, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Canada and United States.where Bhojpuri diaspora are settled.
For the uninitiated, Bhojpuri belongs to the cluster of Indo-European languages. It is part of the Eastern-Hindi or Bengali continuum of languages. Bhojpuri is spoken by around 150 million people in India and another 100 million NRIs. Bhojpuri has a rich body of folklore and folk music.
Well known personalities, whose mother tongue is Bhojpuri, are the first President of Independent India Dr Rajendra Prasad, former Prime Ministers Lal Bahadur Sastry and Chandrasekhar, Bollywood actor Manoj Bajpai and author Munshi Premchand.
