Barfi, starring ranbir kapoor’, priyanka chopra and Ileana D’Cruz, has been selected as India’s official entry for the 85th Academy Awards in the category of Best Foreign Language Film. The announcement has been made by L Suresh of South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce. The film is selected out of 20 shortlisted films that included the likes of Kahaani, Gangs of Wasseypur, Paan Singh Tomar, Eega and Heroine among others.
Only three films – Mehboob Khan’s Mother India, Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay! and Aamir Khan’s Lagaan – from India have managed to get to the final round of Oscar nominations so far.
Produced by UTV Motion Pictures and directed by Anurag Basu, the film Barfi is a love story revolving around a happy-go-lucky deaf-mute Barfi played by Ranbir as he goes through love and heartbreak. Priyanka Chopra plays an autistic girl in the film, which also marks the Bollywood debut of Southern star Ileana D’Cruz.
Made with a budget of Rs 30 crore, the film released on September 14 was a hit at the box office garnering Rs 58.6 crores in the first week. It was critically acclaimed and has all three lead actors delivering brilliant performances.
Barfi is likely to have an English version soon. It is now doing the rounds at International Film Festivals.
