Andala Rakshasi is a triangular love story based in the early 90s starring three newcomers and a debutant director, a fresh producer and a first time music director.
A middle class girl Midhuna ( Lavanya Tripathi) is a college student. She is relentlessly pursued by Surya ( Naveen Chandra) a rough and tough neighbourhood character. Meanwhile, Gautam (Rahul Ravindran), a stinking rich kid, also falls in love with Midhuna. Then three incidents occur: One is God-made, second is Man-made and the third is Self-made! The question now is who will be chosen by Midhuna as her better half? Surya or Gautam? By the way, will she be able to choose at all? The answers lead to a rather oddly stunning climax.
All the three actors, Naveen, Rahul and Lavanya, who played the principal characters, have come out with extraordinary performances. They do not look like newcomers at all! They essay their roles with commensurate ease, commendable conviction and commanding confidence. All three of them have effectively gone under the skin of their respective characters, making them utterly credible. All others contribute their thespian might to the proceedings.
Writer-director Hanu Raghavapudi came into reckoning with his short film I Am Famous on HIV & AIDS. He is a protege of Chandrasekhar Yeleti. On his debut, he writes and presents a simply complicated storyline. The screenplay is not gripping and before the interval the narration velocity decelerates. Dialogues are minimal and apt for each character and occasion, though the delivery is sometimes unnecessarily aggressive or even odd. Music is good and it adds to the varying moods of the narration. Cinematography greatly enhances the story telling values. Sound design is ok. The production values are in accordance with the budget.
Andala Rakshasi is a cleverly crafted celluloid drama. In a pre-release interview, the director says, “ If you ask me how this film will be like, it goes like a love affair between the Earth, the Sun and the Moon.”
Surely, the movie is not completely earthy, partly sunny and not that moony!
Moreover, the moon goes round the earth and the earth goes round the sun, keeping a decent distance. If ever any of the two come close to each other, it would be a colossal disaster.
