Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has been appointed as goodwill ambassador by the United Nations for its mission to help stop new HIV infections in children and promote increased access to antiretroviral treatment.
Rai will work with the UN program on HIV/AIDS, known as UNAIDS, advocating the “Global plan towards the elimination of new HIV infections among children and keeping their mothers alive.”
The plan Aishwarya will promote focuses on 22 countries, including India, which account for more than 90 per cent of new HIV infections among children. Of those, 21 are in sub-Saharan Africa, where the estimated number of children newly infected by HIV fell by 25 percent between 2009 and 2011.
The actress recently addressed students at a UN panel discussion on Peace in New York. She, along with her baby daughter Aaradhya, now proceeds to Chicago to join her husband Abhishek Bachchan, who is shooting for Aditya Chopra’s Dhoom 3.
