The Film

National Award winning director Priyadarshan takes a break from the commercial comedy capers and comes out with a very well made thriller with the topical theme of caste-based honour killings.

The Synopsis

Three college boys from Delhi disappear in Jhanjhar village in Bihar. There is a furore in the media and the government appoints a two-man enquiry commision: a CBI officer Sidhant Chaturvedi (Akshaye Khanna) and an army officer Pratap Kumar (Ajay Devgn). When they reach the village, they encounter strange silences and if anyone talks, the person is done away with. Both the officers relentlessly pursue the leads but they have a speed breaker in the form of police Inspector Ajat Shatru (Paresh Rawal). As the caste angles and honour killings slowly unfold, it is revealed that Geeta (Bipasha Basu) wife of Ajat is an ex-girl friend of Pratap. The investigation is taken further by Roshni (Amita Pathak) and Geetha.

The Performances

Ajay Devgn gives a spirited performance while Akshaye Khanna is cool and convincing. Paresh Rawal gives a scintilating performance. Bipasha Basu essays her role well. Sameera sizzles in the item number. All others do well in properly etched roles.

The Techniques

Priyadarshan comes out with a script and screenplay that takes the audience in a roller-coaster ride with ample surprises. The climax is not the usual type, but the film convincingly exposes the caste and class differences that form the undercurrent of our society. The characters have been deleanated well. Dialogues have lot of pubch. Music adds to the pace of narration though there is just one item song. Cinematography is world class.

The Verdict

Priyadarshan highlights the caste and class differences through a very well made thriller. The film is watchable for the super performances of Ajay Devgn, Akshay Khanna and Paresh Rawal.
