3 Movie Review

The Film
3 set in urban-centric backdrop deals with the 3 phases love and its ramifications between a couple. This is not a mainstream entertainer but probes a tricky psychiatric situation. The film opens with a suicide note hinting that it is not a smooth flowing love story.

The Synopsis
Ram (Dhanush) and Janani (Shruthi Hassan) fall in love while they are students of 12th class. Their romance is opposed by their parents, but the couple grow more closer. Under exceptional circumstances, they get married. Their happy married life gets a rude shock when it is discovered that Ram suffers from Bipolar Disorder, a psychological disease marked by alternating mood swings of mania and depression. How they cope with the situation has to be watched on the screen.

The Performances
Dhanush gives a scintillating performance. His portrayal as the schoolboy, an intense youthful lover and a manic-depressive husband is truly dramatic and convincing. Shruthi Hassan is a credible foil to Dhanush and her performance is outstanding. All others do well in their supporting roles.

The Techniques
How a girl falls in love, marries her lover and finds him psychologically ill is a new and novel plot. The dialogues are meaningful. Aishwarya’s screenplay, slowing down the flow of narration in the latter half, can be attributed to the debut blues or the director’s take on reflecting the impossibility of maintaining a wedded relationship. Music, of course, is on everyone’s lips. Cinematography is remarkable.

The Verdict
3 can be described as an engaging psychological mystery and can be watched for the wonderful performances of Dhanush and Shruthi. The ecstasy of the first half and the agony of the second are strictly for the multiplex cinema buffs. A mere Kolaveri Di may not make the film set the box office on fire. However, Aishwrya R Dhanush should be appreciated for her bold effort.

While watching the 3 movie ..at two particular instances ,I felt they were inspired by the movies “Paranormal Activity” ..where he stands still for few hours. And from “Beautiful Mind ” where his two imaginary figures (one adult and one small girl) appear for a brief period of time just like in that movie .I think they should have given a clue about his disorder in the first half when the girl’s father slaps him..and not when his friend leaves to singapore for work which came out of nowhere.
And Also ,why would an educated well off hero not approach his very supportive father just like in all other ‘life matter’ instances before..That was not answered.
Also, many a times I felt there was too much of helpless crying in the second half .I mean where will you find an educated adult who had lots of money ,supportive parents and wife..would kill himself for a curable health condition..that’s very unrealistic.
Its also setting a wrong example to newly wed girls, who are madly in love, that you should cry for three days if your husband has high temperature and faint when he has got few bruises..instead of being brave.

Just by quoting at the end that killing is not an answer to problems ,will not leave a impact on audience.Instead show how you tackle such situations..so that the audiences can learn from the movie. The director could have done that by.. at least by not starting off on the hero’s death note in the beginning but by showing his scary shock treatment instead.
