3 Idiots Hindi Movie Review
3 Idiots, the third film of director Rajkumar Hirani after Munnabhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munnabhai, is a totally hilarious film with patches of poignant emotions and a thorough entertainer right from scene one.
The film is not a total adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s bestselling novel Five Point Someone, but the plot in the book has been taken to add extremely interesting storylines.
3 Idiots is the story of three friends, Rancho (Aamir Khan), Farhan Qureshi (R Madhavan) and Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi), studying in an engineering college.
The story starts ten years after the three friends complete their graduation. Rancho is not in touch with his two friends all these years. Farhan and Raju go on a road journey in a Volvo XC90 R-Design utility vehicle from Delhi to Ladakh through Shimla and Manali.
The story runs in two time frames and in a to-and-fro ding dong of road trip and flashback of the college days.
During college days, Rancho is a maverick, fun loving, not confirming to traditions, flouting college discipline and appears to be not interested in studies. But, in the exams, he always comes out on top of the class. He incurs the wrath of college Principal Viru Sahastrabudhhe (Boman Irani) and yet earns the love of the principal’s daughter Pia (Kareena Kapoor).
The college life is in full flow right from ragging, harassment by the faculty, pranks, friendships, love affairs, secret drinking sessions and peer trouble. The twist in the tale comes on the Graduation Day. Rancho is awarded the Student Of The Year medal and he suddenly vanishes and becomes incommunicado.
The story leads to a surprising climax that makes you melancholic and think.
Aamir Khan proves once more why he is called the perfectionist. He has got under the skin of Rancho and performs with consummate ease and unbelievable effortlessness. That shows how much effort he takes to play the role.
Kareena Kapoor comes out with another convincing and credible performance. R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi give their best. Boman Irani appears pretty natural as the principal. Mona Singh is acceptable. Akhil Mishra looks the typical Hindi teacher. Javed Jaffrey, Rahul Kumar and Parikshat Sahni justify their cameos.
Rajkumar Hirani wrote the story and dialogue, edited and directed 3 Idiots in a marvelous style. The tone and tenor of the film swings back and forth – from the hilarious to the emotional. The scenes are conceived innovatively, realistically and imaginatively. The dialogues are apt and according to the profile of each character. Rajkumar Hirani once again proves that he is one of the best cinematic story narrator. He makes you laugh, makes the eyes moist, feel goose pimples and makes you think.
Cinematography by C.K. Muraleedharan is extremely good and vibrant. It enhances the various moods of the scenes. Editing Ranjeet Bahadur and Rajkumar Hirani is crisp and never allows the narration to lag in spite of frequent flashbacks. Music by Shantanu Moitra is absorbing and emotionally satisfying. The lyrics by Swanand Kirkire are meaningful.
3 Idiots is an extraordinary entertainer that should not be missed at any cost. Rush to the nearest theater with the entire family and take your friends too. Showing the film is the best New Year eve treat you can give to your family and friends.
