“Dekh Bhai Dekh” release stayed on copy rights issue

The release of Hindi feature film “Dekh Bhai Dekh”, starring Gracy Singh, Siddharth Koirala and directed by Rahat Kazmi, has been stayed by the Delhi High Court after the producer of a TV serial of the same name filed a petition raising the issue of alleged copyrights violation.

Justice Manmohan Singh of the Delhi High Court passed the stay order on a plea by Aanand Mahendroo, producer of the popular comedy TV serial “Dekh Bhai Dekh”, contending that it amounts to violation of his copyright in the title.

Advocates Mukul Rohotki and Prathibha Singh, appearing for the petitioner, submitted that the producer of the film is trying to take undue advantage of the reputation of the title “Dekh Bhai Dekh” of the TV serial which was very famous and was telecast in many countries since 1993.

The producer of the feature film “Dekh Bhai Dekh” either has to change the title or pay compensation to the TV serial producer Aanand Mahendroo to retain the same title.
