Student’s recipe to ease traffic congestion

Student’s recipe to ease traffic congestion Four final year electronics and communication students of the private Velammal Engineering College in Chennai have come out with a novel project called ‘Smart Traffic’, which would ease traffic congestion and enhance safety on the roads.
Presenting the prototype at a press conference here on Friday, G Prasad, one of the team members, said the system developed as part of their final year project would help vehicle monitoring and controlling. He said the system was much more traffic oriented than the conventional time-oriented system used at city junctions.
The infra-red sensors fixed on the roadside would calculate the density of the vehicular traffic at a particular moment of time and the data would be transmitted to a central server, which would in turn control the signals, G Rajarajeswari, another team member, said.
She said by fixing a radio frequency identification tag on an emergency vehicle like ambulance, the system would help the ambulance to wade smoothly through the city traffic. She said they were working on the system to equip it with additional features like automatic toll collection and vehicle theft control. The other two team members were S Archana and S Saravanan.
