Will Sri Rama Navami 2009 bring cheer to BJP?
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), once known as the political wing of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which is a Hindu Nationalist Movement based on the principles of Hindutva. RSS was instituted in 1925 by Dr. K.B. Hedgewar.
Incidentally, Nathuram Godse, murderer of Mahatma Gandhi, was a former member of RSS.
There was a time when the BJP had only two members in the Lok Sabha. Though, Vajpayee, a poet and orator, has been at the helm of affairs of BJP, it was LK Advani, looking after the organizational affairs of the party and former RSS pracharak, who revitalized BJP with his famous (or infamous) Rath Yathra which culminated in the demolition of the 16th century Babri Masjid (Masjid-i Janmasthan) located on the Ramkot Hill in Ayodhya.
The intention of BJP was to construct a Ram Mandir at that site. For reasons, many political analysts fail to fathom, this barbaric incident propelled a wave of Hindutva fundamentalism across the cow belt of the Hindi heartland of India and BJP was swept to power in Delhi with its alliance allys, known as the National Democratic Alliance.
While in power, the BJP did precious little to construct the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.
Defeated by the Congress-led UPA in the 2004 general elections, and raring to go on steam for the 2009 general elections, the BJP released its manifesto which prominently promises to construct the Ram Mandir pronto, if it is voted to power.
Ramayana, the epic authored by sage Valmiki, is regarded as a mythology by some and history by others. As the story of Ram defeating Raavana, the demon king, is pretty popular since generations from time immemorial, Sri Ram is revered as god by many Indians.
Ram is the embodiment of a perfect man, perfect warrior against all evil, perfect husband, perfect parent and perfect king.
The slogan of BJP is that the party, if voted to power, will establish Ram Rajya in India. Ram Rajya is synonymous with perfect and just governance.
When Ram is worshipped as god by millions of Indians, why does the BJP want to confine Ram in a man-made mandir and keep him in house arrest (or temple arrest, perhaps) ?
The policy of BJP is a simple case of blatant political expediency whereby the Lust for Godliness is propagated with missionary zeal simply ignoring the golden thumb rule of Love of God.
Today is Sri Rama Navami. Hope Lord Sri Rama may bless the top brass of BJP with some Ramesque wisdom.
