Bollywood on a remake spree
A number of Bollywood films in 2008 were either remakes or inspired by other language films.
Race was inspired by the Hollywood film Goodbye Lover. Krazzy 4 was an Indianised version of the Micheal Keaton starrer The Dream Team. The film Ugly Aur Pagli was a scene by scene imitation of Korean film Yeopgijeogin Geunyeo titled My Sassy Girl in English.
Maan Gaye Mughal-e-Azam was inspired by Mel Brook’s To Be Or Not To Be. Hit film Dostana is thematically similar to Adam Sandler’s I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. Rohit Shetty’s Sunday was a remake of a Telugu film Anukokunda Oka Raju.
The biggest grosser of the year, Aamir Khan’s Ghajini is an official remake of the Tamil-Telugu film by the same title.
Some more remakes or inspired Bollywood films are in the making getting ready for release in 2009.
Salman Khan’s Wanted Dead and Alive is a remake of Puri Jagannath’s Telugu film Pokiri and Harman Baweja’s Its My Life is a remake of Bhaskar’s Telugu film Bommarillu. Shah Rukh Khan’s Billu Barber is a remake of Malayalam film Katha Parayumpol and Anil Kapoor’s Shortcut is based on Tamil film Udayananu Taram.
Jag Mundhra’s film Naughty at Forty is inspired by the English film The 40 Year Old Virgin.
Ravi Chopra has taken official rights to remake the English film My Cousin Vinny as Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai . Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan starrer London Dreams is inspired from Oscar winning film Amadeus .
Leena Yadav’s Amitabh Bachchan starrer Teen Patti is loosely based on the English film 21. There are also reports that Nagesh Kukunoor’s film Tasveer 8*10 is based on Manoj Night Shyamlan’s Sixth Sense.
There are some more remakes or inspired films that are in the process of being made.
